Tipperary Energy Agency - Driving Ireland's Clean Energy Transition

Specification & Design of Heating Systems with Heat Pumps

Heat Pump Design & Specification Training

Heat Pump Design & Specification Training

The online course aims to enhance the knowledge base of the construction sector in Ireland with respect to heat pumps in homes and commercial buildings. The construction sector have to change their method and type of specifications and designs for heating systems from predominately high carbon heating systems to low carbon heating systems. There are a large number of different types of heat pump heating systems available with a myriad of emitters and controls that require more knowledge than before in appliance selection and design as part of an integrated design of renovations and low energy buildings.

Learning Objectives

Low‑Carbon Heating Trajectory

Understand Ireland’s heating system transition, life‑cycle costs, carbon pricing, and the benefits of becoming experts in low‑carbon heating solutions.

Heat Pump Selection & Design

Learn how to specify the right heat pump for different building types, including system advantages, disadvantages, cost impacts, and emitter design requirements.

Sizing & Modelling Techniques

Understand the differences between sizing heat pumps and fossil fuel systems, and gain an overview of modelling techniques to optimise capital and running costs.

Electrical & Capacity Considerations

Learn about electrical installation limitations, import capacity impacts, and how to optimise heat pump operation using night‑rate electricity.

Performance & Commissioning

Maximise system performance using insights from the SuperHomes 2.0 research project and understand the importance of expert commissioning.

Future Trends & Smart Grids

Explore how future buildings will interact with smart grids, energy pricing, and carbon reduction strategies.
