What is Biogas?

Biogas is a renewable gas made up primarily of methane and carbon dioxide. It is produced through Anaerobic Digestion (AD), where biodegradable organic materials break down in the absence of oxygen.

Biogas can be used to generate energy in several ways:

Heat Production – Combustion in a biogas boiler to produce heat.

Combined Heat & Power – Combustion in a gas engine to generate both electricity and heat.

Upgrading to Biomethane – Purifying and pressurising biogas to create biomethane, which can be injected into the gas network or used as a transport fuel.

What is the cost of switching to biogas?

The cost of purchasing biogas varies depending on the supplier and contract structure. The capital cost of a biogas boiler is broadly comparable to a natural gas boiler, making installation relatively straightforward. However, you may need additional space for a compressed gas canister, which should be factored into your site layout and design.

What factors should be considered before generating biogas on-site?

Businesses planning to produce biogas in‑house should assess several key factors:

  • Feedstock Availability — The type and quantity of feedstock will determine the size and design of the Anaerobic Digestion (AD) facility.
  • Site Location — The site must be suitable for handling feedstock and managing digestate safely and efficiently.
  • Technical Design — System design affects performance, biogas yield, and whether energy is used on‑site or exported.
  • Digestate Management — It’s important to estimate digestate volumes and identify how it can be used, such as a fertiliser for agricultural land.
  • Costs and Revenue — Capital and operating costs should be balanced against savings from producing energy and fertiliser, plus any revenue from selling excess heat or electricity.

Are there any lower-interest loans available to me?

Yes. Banks and credit unions offer discounted finance to businesses undertaking sustainable initiatives to reduce their carbon footprint and operating costs. Our team can help you identify suitable funding options and guide you through the application process.
