What is BESS?

Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) store electricity so it can be used later when your business needs it most. A BESS captures excess energy — typically from Solar PV or the grid — and holds it in high‑capacity batteries. When demand increases, electricity prices rise, or solar generation drops, the stored energy is released to support your site.

By storing and discharging electricity intelligently, BESS helps businesses reduce peak demand charges, increase self‑consumption of renewable energy, improve resilience during outages, and achieve greater control over their energy use.

Solar PV & BESS?

Integrating Solar PV and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) is hugely beneficial and is the most common integration due their complementary operational profiles. Unlike for example wind energy, which generates electricity day and night, solar panels only generate electricity during certain periods of the day. Excess solar power generated can be redirected for storage in your BESS system and used during peak demand times. This reduces energy wastage and maximises resource usage. It also maximises profit as you are selling your energy at peak power price times.

How can TEA help?

Our experienced team of engineers will assess whether integrating Solar PV and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) is technically and financially feasible for your business. We evaluate your site conditions, energy profile, grid constraints, and commercial objectives, and then recommend the most effective next steps to maximise value and long‑term savings.

Time-Shifting & Peak Shaving

Sell or Use Energy When Prices Are Highest
Solar PV produces energy during the day when prices are often low. BESS stores this energy and releases it during peak demand periods, early morning and evening, when prices rise. This allows you to capture higher revenue from energy sales or avoid purchasing more expensive peak power.

Energy Arbitrage

Buy Low Sell High
Combining BESS and Solar PV allows you to take advantage of fluctuations in electricity prices by purchasing energy when rates are low and selling it back during high price periods.

Reduced Grid Upgrade Costs

Co locating Solar PV and BESS reduce the need for expensive grid reinforcement.

Capacity Firming

Solar PV alone is variable. Adding BESS stabilises output, enabling businesses to meet contractual obligations such as Power Purchase Agreements.

Lower Project Development & Construction Costs

Co-developing Solar PV and BESS are cheaper than developing them separately as it decreases project development and construction costs.

Is there space requirements for BESS?

Yes. Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) do have specific space requirements, but they are usually manageable for most commercial sites. In most cases, if your site already has space for plant (e.g. boiler rooms, service yards), a suitable BESS layout can be designed.

Who should consider integrating BESS with Solar PV?

Large energy users should consider integrating BESS with Solar PV, particularly those with high or variable electricity demand. Businesses with strong daytime solar generation and those operating in grid‑constrained locations are also excellent candidates, as storage helps maximise solar utilisation and overcome export or capacity limitations.

Our experienced engineering team will assess your site, energy profile, and commercial objectives to determine whether Solar PV + BESS is the right solution for your business and outline the most effective next steps.
