What is Biomass?
Biomass fuel is a renewable, organic energy source that provides reliable, low‑cost heat.
Conventional oil boilers and biomass boilers operate on the same principle: fuel is burned to produce heat for space heating and hot water. The difference is that biomass uses renewable fuels such as woodchip or pellet, offering a cleaner and more sustainable alternative.
Biomass Combined Heat and Power (CHP) systems go a step further by generating both electricity and heat. They use a gasifier to convert biomass into syngas, which is then purified and combusted. Although more complex, CHP systems deliver higher overall efficiency and maximise the energy value of biomass fuel.

Frequently Asked Questions
What should I consider before switching to biomass?
There are a few practical factors to keep in mind:
- Space Requirements - Biomass boilers are generally larger than conventional oil or gas boilers, so you’ll need sufficient room for the boiler and fuel storage.
- Maintenance - Biomass systems require more regular maintenance, including cleaning and ash removal.
- Fuel Delivery Access - You’ll need suitable access for delivery vehicles to supply woodchip or pellet fuel.
Is planning permission required for a biomass installation?
In many cases, yes, especially for larger commercial or industrial systems.
- Planning Requirements depend on boiler size, flue height, fuel store location, and site layout.
- Environmental considerations such as emissions and noise may also need to be assessed.
What types of biomass fuel can be used in non-domestic systems?
Non‑domestic biomass boilers can use a range of fuels, depending on the boiler design.
- Woodchip — Common for larger commercial systems due to lower cost.
- Wood Pellets — Suitable for automated systems requiring consistent fuel quality.
- Other Biomass Fuels — Some boilers can use agricultural residues or energy crops, depending on specification.
Are there any lower interest loans available to me?
