Templederry Community Windfarm remains one of the clearest examples of community-led renewable energy in Ireland. The project shows how local ambition, technical preparation and long-term persistence can deliver an energy asset with genuine community ownership.
The community wanted to pursue wind energy as part of its wider development plan, but needed technical guidance, site assessment and a route through feasibility, planning and grid-related steps. Community acceptability and local benefit were central from the outset.
TEA supported the local group during the early development pathway, including site selection and wind monitoring preparation. The project grew from feasibility work to planning permission, grid connection and eventual generation, while keeping the objective of local ownership at its core.
The group moved from concept to producing green electricity for sale to the grid in 2012. The project became Ireland’s first community-owned windfarm in operation and established a powerful precedent for local participation in renewable energy development.
